A New Middle East?
Since the destruction of Iran’s nuclear facilities and the announced ceasefire between Israel and Iran, I’ve seen several headlines mentioning the “new Middle East.”
The Jewish News Syndicate wrote about how “the vast majority of Middle Eastern countries were happy to see the Iranian war machine torn apart.”
The cover story of the latest Time Magazine wonders whether Trump’s choice to bomb Iran will “alter the region in unforeseen ways,” given that Iran’s opposition to Israel had defined the region since 1948.
The Financial Times says the “fragile ceasefire” may wind down the conflict, or may set the stage for an even more unstable Middle East, where the power dynamics are now fluctuating.
Others commentators are wondering whether Iran’s nuclear setbacks may only be temporary. We can’t forget that, as Brian Schrauger mentioned in his video last week, Iran still has 400kg of enriched uranium that is not accounted for. (Israel might know where it is.)
