A Controversial New Ceasefire Proposal

If you’ve been trying to follow recent headlines about a potential ceasefire proposal between Israel and Hamas, you’re right to feel confused. The communication and rollout about it has been strange.

First, in a surprise announcement last Friday morning, President Biden said he was outlining a three-part proposal made by Israel and which had been relayed to mediators to Hamas. He said the first phase of the plan would include a six-week “full and complete” ceasefire, including Israel withdrawing its forces from populated parts of Gaza and the release of all women and children being held hostage.

It would also involve humanitarian assistance. During phase one of the proposal, Israel and Hamas would be negotiating for a second phase that involved the release “of all living hostages in exchange for Palestinians imprisoned in Israel,” according to this report.
