I’ve written about Artificial Intelligence before at Tipping Point—about the dangers of computer-brain interfaces, the potential for AI to become sentient, and whether AI could someday become a tool used by the Antichrist.
But a new kind of AI has entered the cultural conversation recently, and it comes with its own ethical and moral questions.
It’s called “Generative AI,” and the startup tech world is excited about it.
First, some definitions. Until recently, most AI might be categorized as “Deterministic AI.” It has been used to identify problems and solutions. It receives inputs based on existing data and then makes decisions based on that input, using a mathematical, deterministic algorithm. For example, it takes in 10,000 examples of problems and their solutions and uses that data to figure out what might be the cause of the 10,001st problem. The world of industry uses this kind of algorithm to figure out which part is broken on a conveyor belt, for instance.
