You have never been home, and neither have I. But when Jesus returns at the Rapture, we will finally get to return home. All of us, as humans, have a longing for home. It’s where we are most comfortable and at peace.
That human longing dates back to the Garden of Eden. Adam and Eve were kicked out of the house about 6,000 years ago because they sinned. They had experienced home. They knew what it was like and what they were losing. They knew its beauty and perfection. They especially knew that God was close and intimate with them in the Garden of Eden.
But then everything was gone.
I have lived in my current home for more than 15 years. During that time, Karen and I have made several changes and improvements. We want a nice place to live, but we also want it to be a welcoming place for our children and grandchildren. We love our home.
You may be in your “forever” home, meaning you are at the stage of life in which you believe you have made your last home purchase.
Or you might be younger and still looking for a home. You may rent a place now and you do everything you can to make it “yours.”
Or you might miss a home you once had—a place from childhood, or a location you truly loved but which didn’t last, for a variety of reasons.
There are hundreds of possible scenarios we could consider when we think about our homes. And it’s not wrong to want a lovely place to live, but we need to keep things in perspective. I don’t want you to think I’m being overly religious when I say this, but we need to focus on God.
Changing Your Perspective
Jesus said this to His followers about the end times:
“Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near.”—Luke 21:28 NKJV
He makes this statement after He tells them about the approaching signs of His return. You see, first Jesus tells His followers about the signs, and then He tells them how to have the right perspective about those signs. When these things begin to happen, now is the time to focus on God like never before.
The world is not our permanent home. As lovely as our individual homes may be, they pale in comparison to what God is preparing for us.
If you know anything about biblical prophecy, then you know the fulfillment of that prophecy is happening all around us. The signs are evident and measurable. We can never say we haven’t been warned, because these things are happening before our eyes. The Bible—the best-selling book in the world—has been telling people for many centuries what to expect. No one will have a legitimate excuse for missing the signs.
Jesus is saying when we see these things begin to happen, then our focus should be on God and eternal things. In other words, as Paul wrote, don’t get dragged down, discouraged, or distracted by earthly things:
For we know that if our earthly house, this tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.—2 Corinthians 5:1 NKJV
This is not our permanent home; we have another one not built by human hands. So focus on the things of God and look up because your redemption draws near.
Your House is Not Your Home
When you leave work or school or wherever else you go every day, you return to a place you call “home,” but I must tell you— that’s not your home. If you are a believer, then your home is in heaven with God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. God really wanted to live with people, and He created the perfect place for us to live in His presence.
How can we know God really wants to live with us? Because when He made Adam and Eve, He lived and walked with them every day. Adam and Eve had everything and lost it when they sinned, but Jesus redeemed it when He died to pay for all our sins. When we became Christians, we received a down payment of the redemption that’s been promised to us, and when Jesus returns, we’ll get everything back in full.
Think about what happened to Adam and Eve:
Then the Lord God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of Us, to know good and evil. And now, lest he put out his hand and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever”— 23 therefore the Lord God sent him out of the garden of Eden to till the ground from which he was taken. 24 So He drove out the man; and He placed cherubim at the east of the garden of Eden, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of life.—Genesis 3:22–24 NKJV
God created us to live in paradise with Him, but sin cannot dwell in God’s presence. So when people sinned, He had to make them leave.
The only way we can be in God’s presence again is for our sin to be removed. That is what Jesus did for us through His sacrifice on the cross. His blood covers our sin, and we can be in God’s presence once again.
Jesus died, rose again, and ascended to His Father, but He has been working ever since. He tells us where He is today, what He is doing, and that He is going to come back to take us with Him:
“Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. And where I go you know, and the way you know.”—John 14:1–4 NKJV
Jesus told His followers He was leaving. He also told them He wants to show them where He is going. It will help us understand exactly what Jesus is saying if we recognize He is using Jewish wedding language, which I have written about before and discussed in this post.
A first-century Jew would have understood from the statement above that Jesus is talking about marrying us. He is saying, “I’m going to my Father’s house to prepare a place for you. One day, I’ll return for you and take you to be with Me forever.”
Comfort, Safety and Peace
When the Rapture happens, we will finally go home. For the first time in our lives, we will step into a new place and recognize we are finally home in the Father’s house, the New Jerusalem. Jesus is preparing mansions for all of us there.
You may return “home” at the end of the day. You may be reading this article right now in a room under the roof that you call “home.” You are in a place of comfort, safety and peace.
But it’s not your true home. Nor is this world our permanent home. The world is passing away, as it says in 1 John 2. And we are just passing through.
Heaven is our home. And if you know Jesus, He is preparing to take you there soon.
