Those are questions the whole world is asking. Right now, the answers are unknowable. In a speech on October 1, 1939, at the beginning of World War II, Winston Churchill reflected on the actions of Russia, saying, “Russia is a riddle wrapped up in a mystery, inside an enigma.”

Churchill’s words still ring true today. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine—and what might happen next—are wrapped in a great deal of geopolitical and economic mystery. Some news agencies are speculating that Vladimir Putin is not well. He seems increasingly unstable and unhinged. Could he also attack the free Baltic states? What about the rest of eastern Europe?
