National Security Adviser Tzachi Hanegbi said in an interview with Kan public radio that “this year, we expect another seven months of combat, in order to deepen our achievement and achieve what we define as the destruction of the military and governing capabilities of both Hamas and the Islamic Jihad.”
Hanegbi said Israel had three goals to achieve before ending the war in Gaza:
Destroying Hamas’ infrastructure
Bringing home the hostages
Removing any threat to Israel in the Gaza strip
Until those goals were achieved, the war would continue, he said. Hanegbi added that he fighting was “not just justified and not just essential,” but critical for Israel’s ability to maintain independence, even though the rest of the world is putting enormous pressure on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to come to a ceasefire agreement.
