The Stone That Zechariah Saw
There are a lot of Israel-related stories this week. Why review them? What is the bigger story that they tell?
Consider this. Turkey’s foreign minister said it out loud this week. Israel, he said, “has become a burden humanity can no longer bear.” He meant it as an insult. He didn’t know he was quoting scripture.
Zechariah wrote it twenty-five hundred years ago. Jerusalem will become “a burdensome stone for all peoples.” Everyone who tries to lift it will be cut in pieces, even though all the nations of the earth gather against it. We are watching this very thing become reality.
This week’s headlines make the case. The Iran ceasefire, barely three weeks old, is already “over,” in the President’s own words. Missiles hit tankers in the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. forces strike back, twice, in two days. Iran fires back at American bases.
And through it all, Erdogan smiles his way deeper into NATO’s good graces, even while calling on Allah to destroy the Jewish state. Trump likes Erdogan. Trump likes Bibi… “but.”
