Netanyahu Pressured from All Sides
No politician is perfect, of course, but I have always respected Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Until he lost power in 2021 and then again after her returned to power in 2022, I believe he has been a great leader for Israel and an incredible statesman. He has stood strong against Israel’s enemies, especially Iran.
But right now, he may be facing the toughest test of his political career. Yesterday his most prominent world ally, President Biden, said he would halt some shipments of American weapons to Israel if Netanyahu were to launch a full-scale ground operation into Rafah. Congress has asked the administration for a report on whether Israel is using American weapons “in accordance with international law.” Last month, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer, the highest-ranking Jewish official in American politics, called for new elections and said Netanyahu had “lost his way.”
Things are even more complicated for Netanyahu at home in Israel. Many Israelis still blame him for allowing the October 7 attacks to happen, or at least for not having the foresight to prevent them. They are calling for new elections or for him to step down as Prime Minister.
