The assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Iran escalates fears of a regional war
The last few days have seen a flurry of news about Israel and Hezbollah, which I wrote about on Tuesday and which we have discussed in multiple formats this week. But breaking news last night has sent that story into another gear.
Ismail Haniyeh, one of the most senior and visible Hamas leaders, was assassinated overnight in Iran. He had been in Tehran to attend the inauguration of Iran’s new president, Masoud Pezeshkian.
The shock assassination is being blamed on an Israeli airstrike, which itself came just hours after Israel also killed Fuad Shukr, a top Hezbollah commander, in Beirut.
Iran’s supreme leader is already vowing revenge against Israel.
