Putin as Gog? The Russian Leader’s Role in Bible Prophecy

On this week’s program, I examine how the ongoing Russia–Ukraine war, now grinding on for over 1,300 days with catastrophic casualties, is setting the stage for the fulfillment of the Gog-Magog prophecy in Ezekiel chapters 38–39. Written over 2,600 years ago, this prophecy predicts an end-time invasion of Israel by an alliance led by Russia, along with Iran, Turkey, and several Islamic nations. As President Trump pursues peace negotiations between Putin and Zelensky, I see three specific ways that current events foreshadow what’s coming.

First, Russia’s obsession with recreating its Soviet past and former glory could serve as the “hooks in the jaws” that God uses to draw Russia into this invasion. Putin has called the Soviet Union’s breakup “the greatest political catastrophe of the 20th century,” and this nostalgia for empire could motivate Russian involvement in an attack on Israel.

Second, the growing division between Europe and Russia creates the East-versus-West alignment we see in end-times prophecy, where the Antichrist from a reunited Roman Empire will have a peace covenant with Israel that Russia’s invasion will directly challenge.

Third, Vladimir Putin himself bears the evil characteristics we might expect from the final Russian ruler called “Gog.” While I’m careful not to conclusively identify Putin as Gog, he is certainly “Gog-like” and may be setting the stage for this prophetic fulfillment.

I provide ten identifying features of this religious leader who will point the world to worship the Antichrist, and ten keys to understanding the Mark of the Beast, including why current technology makes such a system not only possible but probable.
