Renovation or Re-Creation?
Two perspectives on the "New Heaven and New Earth"
You’ve heard of the “new heaven and new earth” promised by the Bible. But have you ever wondered how it would come about?
According to Revelation 20-22, after Jesus returns to earth, there will be a final resurrection, a thousand-year reign of Jesus on a renewed earth, a final judgment, and finally a new heaven and new earth. The new heaven and new earth—which is the final phase of God’s prophetic program—will be our final, forever home.
It’s concisely described toward the end of the Book of Revelation:
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and there is no longer any sea.—Revelation 21:1
Much about the new creation is plain, but one issue that has been debated about the coming new world order is the nature of the new heaven and new earth.
Will it be a remodel or recreation of the current earth and universe—something like Earth 2.0?
Or will the present order be destroyed and rebuilt or replaced by a brand-new heaven and earth?
