The Space Threat from Russia and China
In early 2024, when reports began to emerge about Russia planning the use of nuclear weapons in space—potentially to destroy U.S. satellites—military experts have been saying that the next major war might not be fought on the ground, but in orbit.
International agreements meant to deter nuclear threats on earth may not extend into space, which means calls for the United States to get serious about defending its satellites from the ambitions of Russia and China. Both countries are taking steps to become space powers, a Fox News contributor wrote in this opinion piece:
The truth is, whoever controls the space domain will dominate the future global economy. If America was the preeminent space power from Presidents John F. Kennedy to Ronald Reagan, we’ve let our edge slip away, while China and Russia aim to displace us altogether.
In fact, a State of the Space Industrial Base conference report issued in 2022 predicted that China will overtake the U.S. as the dominant space power by 2032.
As for Russia, it is already positioned to use ground-based lasers designed to disrupt satellite systems like GPS.
In 2007, China tested a way to “kill” satellites from the ground, which would severely disrupt our military’s ability to perform reconnaissance or plan troops movements.
