Israel is in Crisis

As we’ve mentioned on multiple occasions in recent months, Benjamin Netanyahu’s proposed judicial changes in Israel—which were met by large-scale protests by citizens, military reservists, banks, tech companies, and many other institutions—have brought the country to the brink of internal crisis over the past seven months.

The protests reached a tipping point earlier this week as, on Monday morning, Netanyahu’s hard-right, nationalist government passed the law Israel’s citizens were worried about. The new law weakens the country’s judicial system in favor of authoritarian control. It passed 64-0 because every member of the opposition party refused to vote out of protest.
