Australia Reverses West Jerusalem Decision

In a move that embraces a “two-state solution” and has been welcomed by Palestinians, Australian leaders announced earlier this week that they were reversing the country’s 2018 decision to recognize West Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

After President Trump recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital in late 2017, relocating the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem in 2018, Australia followed suit. Then-Prime Minister Scott Morrison had announced that Australia recognized West Jerusalem immediately but would hold off on plans to move its embassy to Tel Aviv until Israel and Palestine achieved a peace settlement.
