Brazil’s Government Attacked by Protestors

With photos that reminded me of the violence in the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, we saw news reports earlier this week of protestors storming government buildings in the Brazilian capital city of Brasilia, destroying offices, stealing government property, dismantling artwork and leaving bodily fluids throughout the Supreme Court and Congress buildings.

By Sunday night, the buildings had been cleared of protestors and around 1,500 arrests had been made. The rioters appear to have been supporters of Brazil’s former president Jair Bolsonaro, who lost a run-off election in October to Lula da Silva. The protestors opposed that victory and demanded a military intervention to restore Bolsonaro to power.
