France Makes Abortion a Constitutional Right

In Monday, during a rare, historic joint session of parliament at the Palace of Versailles, the nation of France added the right to an abortion into its constitution. This made it the first country in the world to guarantee abortion in its basic system of law.

The move appears to be a response to the overturning of Roe v. Wade in the United States, as French news reports indicate citizens were “alarmed” by the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision and want to ensure abortion remains legal in their country.

On the former Twitter last week (now X), French president Emmanuel Macron said this: “I made a commitment to make women’s freedom to have an abortion irreversible by inscribing it in the constitution.”
