Israel Considering “Plan B” in Response to Iran
Earlier this week, Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz said that if world powers like the United States do not come to a nuclear agreement with Iran, Israel will immediately be forced to activate what he called “Plan B.”
Iran is enriching uranium in order to expand its nuclear capabilities. Gantz said the nation—which is a sworn enemy of Israel—is “close to 90% enrichment once they decide to reach it.”
He indicated that a failure to return to a nuclear deal with Iran would give Jerusalem legitimacy to attack Iran, this article explained:
Any American new plan against Iran would need to involve military muscle, and [Efraim Inbar, president of the Jerusalem Institute for Strategy and Security] doubted the United States is willing to commit to that. Israel, he said, does have another way to deal with Iran, and that would involve a full military operation…
But before Israel could carry out such an attack, it would need to first eliminate the closer and more immediate threat that Hezbollah poses on Israel’s northern border with Lebanon, said Inbar, and Israel isn’t ready for that.
The negotiations taking place in Vienna have been ongoing for the past year between nations including France, Germany, Britain, Russia and China, but are currently stalled. Meanwhile, Israeli military intelligence believes Hezbollah—an immediate threat on Israel’s northern border—has more than 100,000 rockets aimed at the nation. Before attacking Iran, Israel may first turn its military attention to Iranian proxies like Hezbollah.
