Google’s “Godfather of AI” Regrets His Work
Last week, in an interview with the New York Times, one of Google’s leading artificial intelligence researchers revealed he quit his job in order to speak freely about the risks of AI. The 75-year-old Geoffrey Hinton has won prominent awards for his trailblazing contributions to computing and technology, but now says he has some significant regrets about helping develop machine learning systems.
In the interview, he warned that AI could be dangerous if it continues to develop without proper oversight and governmental regulation. He also expressed concerns that AI could become so powerful humans lose control of it. If so, the technology could lead to unintended and catastrophic consequences:
