I’m introducing a new written post format this week to accompany our regular videos and other content, simply because there is so much going on in the world.
I know a lot of you in this community rely on Tipping Point to be a primary source of news. This weekly news digest will do part of that work. (As usual, links to a media source do not necessarily imply my full agreement with that information or source. I only want you to know what’s being reported.)
Please let me know how you like this “digest” approach!
Bird Flu: “100 Times Worse” than COVID?
A couple of weeks ago I mentioned that the H5N1 avian flu had been discovered in Texas cattle, after having infected wild birds in every state in America. It’s now spreading to mammals, and last week health officials announced a dairy worker had tested positive for the virus.
So far, the human case is very rare. But scientists are worried, and saying this is the greatest pandemic threat facing humanity right now:
“This appears to be 100 times worse than COVID — or it could be if it mutates and maintains its high case fatality rate,” [one consultant] said.
“Once it’s mutated to infect humans, we can only hope that the [fatality rate] drops.”
Since 2003, around 52 percent of humans who have contracted H5N1 have died. In comparison, COVID killed less than 0.1 percent of those it infects. Humans don’t have immunity against bird flu. Officials in the U.S. government say they are taking the virus very seriously.
