In this episode, I explore the Davidic Covenant, one of the four major biblical covenants God makes with Israel. This unilateral, unconditional, and eternal covenant expands the “seed” promise of the Abrahamic Covenant. I explain how God’s promise to David features three key elements: a house (dynasty), a throne (ruling authority), and a kingdom (realm of authority). Though David wants to build God a house (temple), God instead promises to build David a greater “house” through an eternal dynasty.
While Solomon partially fulfills this covenant, its ultimate fulfillment awaits Jesus Christ, the “Son of David,” who will one day sit on David’s throne in a literal, earthly, political kingdom. I emphasize that since the parts of this covenant already fulfilled (like God’s discipline of David’s descendants) were literal, we should expect the future elements to be literal as well, pointing to Christ’s Millennial Reign rather than merely a spiritual fulfillment in the present age.
