Iran has launched a direct drone attack on Israel

Israel Warned to Take Cover as Iran Launches Drones

As predicted earlier this week by U.S. officials and other intelligence agencies, Iran has launched an attack on Israel. The Israeli Defense Forces have warned citizens to take cover, while Israel’s air defenses are deployed and waiting for the arrival of the drones, which could take several hours.

President Biden has already cut short a weekend trip to his home in Delaware and has returned to the White House to monitor the situation with his national security team:

“Iran has begun an airborne attack against Israel,” National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson said in a Saturday statement. “The United States will stand with the people of Israel and support their defense against these threats from Iran.”

The New York Times reports the following:

The Israeli military said on Saturday that Iran had launched drones from its territory toward Israel, in what appeared to be retaliation for a deadly Israeli airstrike in early April on the Iranian Embassy complex in Damascus, the Syrian capital. A military spokesman said Israeli forces were following the aerial threat, which would take a few hours to arrive.

Iran’s action on Saturday came after a week of diplomacy and conflicting reports about how far Tehran would go in response to the Damascus attack, and whether it would risk an outright war in the region with Israel.

Iran has confirmed the drone launch: “The aerospace unit of the Revolutionary Guards has attacked targets in Israel with dozens of drones and missiles in reaction to the Zionist regime’s crimes, including the attack on the consulate section of Iran’s embassy in Damascus and martyring our commanders and military advisers in Syria,” the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps said in a statement broadcast on Iranian television just before 4 p.m. Central time in the U.S.

Israel is working with its allies to intercept the drones:

Israel Defense Forces spokesperson Daniel Hagari said Saturday that Israel would work “in close coordination” with the U.S. and regional partners to intercept the launches.

Israel has been preparing for the possibility of this attack since its airstrike in Damascus on April 1, after which Iran began threatening retaliation. Top Iranian officers were killed in the strike. “We will make them regret this crime,” said Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Militaries in the United States and Iran have been on high alert since those statements. Benjamin Netanyahu met with his security team just yesterday to discuss the potential attack. “We are prepared to defend ourselves on the ground and in the air, in close cooperation with our partners, and we will know how to respond,” Israel’s Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said after the meeting.

Israel’s military has closed schools and large gatherings across the country, with restrictions in place until at least Monday evening.
