Tomb of the Patriarchs

Israel Update with Brian Schrauger (04.15.25)
50

I am currently out of town this week but wanted to revisit an old episode that takes viewers to the ancient city of Hebron, just south of Jerusalem, where I meet with Yishai Fleisher, spokesperson for the Jewish community in Hebron. Yishai guides us through the magnificent 2,000-year-old structure built by King Herod over the Cave of Machpelah, where the biblical patriarchs and matriarchs (Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Rebecca, Jacob, and Leah) are buried. He explains the historical significance of the site, including the 700 years when Jews could only pray up to the seventh step outside their own sacred place. Serving in the reserves during the current conflict, Yishai shares his perspective on Israel's fight against jihadist ideology in Gaza and beyond, describing it as a battle between light and darkness. He also relates a touching story about Arab-Jewish cooperation during his daughter's bat mitzvah celebration that demonstrates the possibility of peaceful coexistence.
